When I was young I loved to hear...
stories of why I had nothing to fear;
I trusted the teller when it was said:
“There are no monsters under your bed!”
I don’t think our Father had in His Mind...
that growth and maturity would redefine...
the ability He planted in me;
Is The Teller now any less worthy?
When I was young my grandfather died;
His bed and his bedroom then became mine;
Old metal springs and a metal frame,
that would squeak when I moved; My room wasn’t the same!
Curtains hung over the closet doors;
Their movement made me feel less than secure;
Things were fine ‘till I turned out the light;
Then, sometime, in the dark of the night...
the bed started squeaking rhythmically,
Fear had entered the bedroom with me!
My big brother was in his bedroom next door and overheard me crying;
When he asked what was wrong, it didn’t take him long...
to come up with a plan so that I would see:
He would not allow monsters to torment me!
He pulled up a chair beside my bed...
turned out the light and then He said:
Lay very still and I will stay here;
I will not leave; You have nothing to fear!
We didn’t wait long and it happened again;
He observed that squeak had a definite rhythm!
I was ready to vacate the room...’till he gave me the understanding:
I was so scared, my heart pounded hard and fear began expanding...
shaking the bed to my heartbeat; Still he stayed in the chair!
Thus, fear’s defeat!
Neither of us knew, at that time;
before we knew God our paths were defined!
Dragon slayers come in all circumstances;
Yet, I suspect the child should remain...
with that kind of trust that can rest in the same...
promises given in the dark of the night:
I’ll stay right here ‘till that monster takes flight!
Together Our trust will demand that he leave;
My Rest will replace every dis-ease!
Not everyone is blessed like I am,
with an older brother that said, “Yes” to Him...
but I promise you this: When you rely on His Name,
Your Big Brother, Christ Jesus, will do the same!
